Youth need to be taught patriotism

Bhagwat: Youth need to be taught patriotism

Nagpur: "Saying 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' should come naturally to each one of us. But nowadays, one has to implore youth and teach them the patriotic slogan. This is because those trying to oppose 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' are growing in numbers and they are getting louder." This was RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's first, albeit indirect, remark on the recent incidents related to Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
Following a sedition case against JNU student leader Kanhaiyya Kumar and allegations that the gathering he organized on February 9 in Delhi raised antinational slogans, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and political offshoot BJP, have been aggressively protesting against the incident. On Thursday, Bhagwat made first indirect comment on it.

"Affection for mother and motherland are part of human instincts. But sadly, we are going through such times when youngsters have to be taught to say 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'", said Bhgawat. Though he did not name JNU or its leaders, he said those opposing the slogan are doing so blatantly with confidence that they can drown the voice of nationalists. The Sarsanghachalak was speaking at a function to felicitate legendary social activist Sindhutai Sapkal.
The function was organized by Gajanan Maharaj temple trust at Reshimbagh where Sapkal was given Matrushakti Award at the hands of RSS chief. It was only a brief and oblique reference to the JNU episode. Otherwise his nearly half-an-hour speech dwelt on empowerment of women. "It's not that man is not capable of uplifting women. All he can do is to facilitate freeing her from bonds so that she can express herself," Bhagwat added.
"With their immense sense to overcome odds and stay in control, women have great role to play in development of the country. Men should appreciate women's powers and realize that stronger women means a stronger nation," said Sapkal replying to the felicitations. "At the same time, a woman should keep her sensitivities alive," Sapkal stressed.
Former chief judge of family court, Meera Khadakkar, who was guest of honour said Sapkal had demonstrated how a woman can rise from adversities through love and humility.
